Case Study
From Placement Breakdown to GCSE Success
Starting Point
The student joined Arise ALP in Year 9 following a breakdown in both his mainstream school placement and a previous alternative provision. His engagement with education had significantly reduced and he needed a fresh approach that could rebuild relationships while still challenging him academically.
Our Approach
Rather than reducing expectations, we developed an individualised timetable designed to both engage and stretch him. As his confidence and engagement grew, our teaching team built a broad GCSE programme around his strengths and interests, including English Language, Maths, Science, History and Photography.
Alongside his academic programme, consistent relationships with staff, mentoring and a flexible approach helped him rebuild a positive relationship with education and significantly improve his attendance.
The Outcome
By the end of Year 11, he had achieved over 90% attendance and completed GCSE qualifications across all five subjects.
His results included a Grade 5 in GCSE Photography and a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language, alongside qualifications in Maths, Science and History.
Most importantly, a young person whose previous placements had broken down finished Year 11 engaged in education, attending consistently and leaving with a meaningful set of qualifications to support his next steps.
